Polar Winds Data Set Delivered: A 10-day data set of satellite-derived winds over the Arctic and Antarctic has been made available to the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Data Assimilation Office (DAO), and the U.S. Navy.  The winds are derived from MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data by tracking clouds and water vapor features with  the same method as that used for geostationary satellite data.  The ECMWF, the DAO, and the Navy will use the data set to determine to what extent the inclusion of wind information in these data sparse regions impacts forecasts. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

Input Provided on GOES ABI/ABS Cost Benefit Analysis: T. Schmit gave an interview with the MITRE Corporation for the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Advanced Baseline Imager/Advanced Baseline Sounder (ABI/ABS) cost benefit analysis. Two electronic presentations were transmitted, one on the benefits of the ABI and one on the benefits of ABS.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

GOES-12 Scan Mirror Emissivity Update Tested: Researchers at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) tested the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -12 Imager scan mirror emissivity coefficients that were updated on October 11, 2001. The Satellite Operations Control Center (SOCC) installed a new set of scan-mirror emissivity coefficients  in the GOES-12 calibration procedure for both the Imager and the Sounder, correcting for the east-west scan-angle dependence of the emissivity and reflectance of the scan mirrors.  The new coefficients had an immediate positive effect on data, most evident in band 6 of the imager.  See the CIMSS GOES-12 Science Test Page for more information (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/g12_report).  (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Presentation Material Provided to S. Gudes: Recent examples of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-12 Imager and Sounder data, Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI)
simulations from MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data, and Advanced Baseline Sounder (ABS) simulations were provided to S. Gudes (as requested by J. Pereira) for possible presentation at the upcoming American Meteorological Society (AMS) conference in Madison, Wisconsin. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

AMS Conference in Madison: The American Meteological Society's 11th Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography will be held in Madison, Wisconsin at the Monona Terrace Conference Center next week, October 15-18.  Scientists from the Advanced Satellite Products Team (ASPT) and Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies will be presenting over 40 posters.  Invited presentations will be given by E. Prins (ASPT), S. Ackerman (CIMSS), and H. Revercomb (Space Science and Engineering Center).  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

Rapid Scan GOES imagery of Hurricane Iris: The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-8) was placed into Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) mode on October 8, acquiring imagery of Hurricane Iris at 1-minute intervals. The hurricane was undergoing a period of rapid intensification and cloud top temperatures were seen to be cooling around the eastern and northern quadrants of the eyewall region. Images and Java animations are available on the CIMSS GOES Gallery (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/011008/011008.html). (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)
