Examples of the Improved Water Vapor Imagery on GOES-12: The
improved spatial resolution of water vapor imagery from the Geostationary
Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -12 is evident in comparisons
to GOES-10 and GOES-8. The GOES-12 water vapor band has 4 km detectors
in contrast to the 8 km detectors on GOES-8/11, although image differences
are also due to viewing geometry and the different spectral response function
widths. Water vapor boundaries appear smoother on GOES-12 and small -scale
features such as mountain waves are better resolved. This will improve
meteorological analyses of these features and will result in better feature
tracking for wind retrievals. Image and animation examples comparing
GOES-12 to GOES-10 and GOES-8 are available at: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/011119/011119.html.

Clear Sky Brightness Temperature Format Modifications:
The Binary Universal Format for the Representation of meteorological data
(BUFR) encoder, which encodes Clear Sky Brightness Temperature (CSBT) data
derived from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES),
has been modified to include solar senith angle. The longitude was
corrected to be in the range -180 East to +180 East and the BUFR message
subtype was changed to be consistent with the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO) standard. The new modifications took effect Novemmber 19, 2001.

VISITORS:
NEXT WEEK:
SEARCH Workshop: J. Key will travel to Seattle to participate
in a workshop on atmospheric and oceanic observations for Arctic climate
change studies. The workshop is sponsored primarily by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as part of the Study of Environmental
Arctic Change (SEARCH) program. (J.
Key , E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
