ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

CIMSS Board Meeting: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) held its annual Board of Directors meeting on Friday, December 7.  The CIMSS Board has representatives from the University of Wisconsin, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  M. Colton (Office of Research and Applications) and J. Key (Advanced Satellite Products Team) are on the Board and were in attendance. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
 

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Presentation at CIMSS Board Meeting: On December 7, 2001 T. Schmit gave a presentation to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies Board of Directors entitled "GOES at CIMSS:  Turning Geostationary Satellite Data into Information". CIMSS Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) work from seven areas was summarized: product development, product improvement and visualization, product validation, product implementation and support, data assimilation, publications and training, and future GOES. VISITORS:

NOAA ETL Visitor: Taneil Uttal from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Environmental Technology Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on December 5-6.  Ms. Uttal's interests are in surface-based remote sensing of clouds with radar and lidar instruments.  She operated a cloud radar instrument during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) experiment and maintains the instrument at the Barrow, Alaska Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Cloud and Radiation Testbed site. She gave a seminar and met with many scientists to discuss satellite remote sensing of clouds. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
