Validation of Surface Radiation in Antarctica: Satellite retrievals of downwelling shortwave, downwelling longwave, and net radiation at the surface were compared to in situ measurements from Neumayer Station, Antarctica.  The satellite retrievals are based on data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). On a monthly time scale, differences in the net and downwelling longwave fluxes are on the order of 3-10%.  Differences in the downwelling shortwave flux are greater, probably because of the high variability of surface albedo for this coastal station, which makes comparisons of point (in situ) and area (satellite) measurements difficult. Comparisons with South Pole Observatory are underway. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Manuscript Review: A manuscript titled "Arctic Sea Ice, Cloud, Water and Lead Classification
using Neural Networks and 1.6µm Data" was reviewed by J. Key for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing.  IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

VISIT Activities: During December 2001, the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) instructional component "An Ingredients-Based Methodology for Forecasting Winter Season Precipitation" was delivered to 22 forecast offices of the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC). The lesson material was also updated to include Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imagery from a recent snow event in early December 2001 over Minnesota. (S. Bachmeier , CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Wetzel-Seemann, 608-265-5357, CIMSS)
