Wildfire ABBA Transferred to Operations:  The initial transfer of the merged Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-8/-10) Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA, version 5.9) system to a Dell workstation in the Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD) is complete.  Comparison studies show that the system is nearly twice as fast as a similar system running on a Silicon Graphics
Octane machine.  Further tests and comparisons with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) WF_ABBA will be done with real-time products over the next six weeks.  An updated version of the system will be transferred in February.  (C. Schmidt, CIMSS, 608-262-7973, E. Prins,, E/RA2, 608-263-6607)

Cloud Detection Video Teleconference: A video teleconference with scientists from the Advanced Satellite Products Team (ASPT) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) in Madison, Wisconsin, and the Office of Research and Applications (ORA) in Camp Springs, Maryland was held on January 16, 2002.  The purpose of the conference was to review the range of cloud detection methods used for research and product generation within the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS).  Algorithms for both geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites were described.  Madison attendees included W.P. Menzel, T. Schmit, J. Key, A. Schreiner, R. Frey, and J. Li.  The meeting was arranged by A. Heidinger. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

GOES-12 Science Test Retrieval Results:  Comparisons of Total Precipitable Water (TPW) derived from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-12 retrievals and collocated retrievals from GOES-8 and GOES-10 indicate that GOES-12 should produce more accurate retrievals.  The evaluations were conducted during the period October 8, 2001 through December 16, 2001.  In terms of overall bias, GOES-12 was approximately 0.5 mm (millimeters) closer to radiosondes than GOES-8, and 0.25 mm better than GOES-10.  In terms of overall standard deviation, GOES-12 improved on GOES-8 by approximately 0.25 mm, and by a little less than 0.20 mm compared with GOES-10.
