GOES SPOP Meeting: T. Schmit convened a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounding Product Oversight Panel (SPOP) on January 24th at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Science Center. Five out of the top six items on the "top ten" list have been completed since the previous meeting. T. Schmit attended an Advanced Baseline Sounder (ABS) Data Compression Meeting on Friday-January 25, 2002 in Suitland, MD.  All the meeting objectives were met. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

New Product Overviews Provided for the GOES Products and Services Catalog:  Descriptions for three new Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) products were provided to Gene Kelly for inclusion in the GOES Products and Services Catalog.  They are the GOES Imager Clear Sky Brightness Temperature (CSBT) product, the Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) fire product, and the Merged Automated Cloud/Aerosol Detection Algorithm (MACADA) product.  The CSBT and WF_ABBA are currently being transitioned into National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) operations.  The MACADA is an experimental research product that is being used to monitor trends in clouds and smoke in South America.  (T. MACADA Figure Caption:  The figure gives an example of the application of the GOES MACADA in South America for 1445 UTC on August 26, 1995.  Output from the MACADA includes a cloud analysis (panel b) and a smoke analysis (panel c).  The MACADA output is then used in computing aerosol optical thickness (AOT) (panel d).

PoDAG Meeting: J. Key will participate in a meeting of the Polar Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) Advisory Group (PoDAG) in Greenbelt, Maryland on February 4-5.  PoDAG provides guidance to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC, Boulder, Colorado) on issues regarding data set selection, distribution, and applications.  (J. CIMSS Scientist to Receive David Johnson Award: G. Withee notified Jun Li of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) that he is to be the 2002 recipient of the prestigious David S. Johnson Award. David Johnson was the first Assistant Administrator of National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). Dr. Li has helped to guide many weather satellite programs, supporting important goals in evaluating and  enhancing the polar and geostationary operational environmental satellite (POES and GOES) remote sensing programs. His projects include the development and implementation of several products from the current GOES sounder and future high-spectral resolution sounders, the development and evaluation of combined POES/GOES retrievals, algorithm development for the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument, and cloud classification studies. NWS Operational Forecasters Utilize Wetzel Ingredients Methodology: During the past week of significant winter weather across much of the United States, several National Weather Service (NWS) forecast discussions from NWS offices in Arizona, Iowa, and Wisconsin have indicated that they are finding the Wetzel Winter Ingredients-based Methodology (IM) to be useful in an operational environment. Some examples of the forecast discussion text include: (1) "THE QPV AREA...WETZEL ET. AL....IS REALLY NAILING THIS AND HAS SINCE TUE", (2) "INITIAL LOOK AT ETA MODEL AND WETZEL INGREDIENTS SHOWS POTENTIAL OF ANOTHER ROUND OF HVY SNOW", and (3) "IN FACT...WINTER INGREDIENTS SHOW A BULLSEYE OF CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY ALONG THE NOSE OF THE DRY SLOT (OR JET) MOVE NORTHEAST INTO THE SYSTEM". The Wetzel IM has been offered as a Virtual Institute for Satellite Ingegration Training (VISIT) tele-training lesson during the past two winter seasons. (S. Wetzel Seemann, CIMSS, 608-265-5357, S. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

VISITview Upgrade: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) VISITview teletraining and collaboration software developed at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was upgraded during January, 2002.  The changes will allow instructors to more easily make use of real-time data during prepared lessons by allowing them to specify image files from an arbitrary Web address which are then loaded in realtime during teletraining sessions.  The upgrade also includes the ability to automatically append arrow heads to line drawings used for annotating slides, and to construct oval-shaped figures.
