ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Warm Season QPF Workshop: Last week a workshop sponsored by the U.S. Weather Research Program (USWRP) was held in Boulder, Colorado for the purpose of developing an implementation plan for a 5-10 year program of research leading to improved quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF). The workshop brought together experts in the areas of nowcasting, data assimilation, observational mix, numerical weather prediction, statistical forecasting, verification, hydrologic forecasting, and societal impact. R. Aune led the discussion group on observational mix which was tasked with determining what combination of observations and observing systems researchers need to understand and improve QPF.  An implementation plan guiding this research will be generated in May.  (R. Aune, ER/2, 608-262-1071)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Science Night at Elm Lawn Elementary:  R. Aune gave a demonstration of how meteorologists use new observations and visualization techniques to produce more accurate forecasts of the weather at the annual Science Night exhibition at the Elm Lawn Elementary School, Middleton, Wisconsin.  A presentation on observing the atmosphere showed how satellites are used to remotely sense important atmospheric parameters.  A workstation running Vis5D was available for would-be forecasters to interactively manipulate and animate the current numerical forecast in three dimensions. (R. Aune, ER/2, 608-262-1071)

PSDI Training: T. Schmit and J. Key took part via teleconference in a training session for proposals to the Office of System Development (OSD) Product Systems Development and Implementation (PSDI) program.  The training session was lead by Mr. Tom Schott of OSD. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

GOES Biomass Burning Monitoring Abstracts Submitted to Spring AGU Meeting:   Four abstracts relating to Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) biomass burning monitoring applications were submitted to the spring American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting to be held May 28-31, 2002 in Washington D.C.  Three abstracts were submitted to the special session "Fires, Scars, and Smoke: Observations, Impact, and Policies."  Topics include an overview of the GOES Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) processing system, case study comparisons of GOES WF_ABBA fire observations and downwind Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) derived carbon monoxide values, and an invited talk on recent GOES fire monitoring activities and applications in the Western Hemisphere.  The fourth abstract was submitted to the session "AERONET: Aerosol Observations, Related Investigations, and Synergism" regarding GOES-8 derived AOT in North and South America and comparisons with ground truth sun photometer data during two field campaigns. (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607, J. Feltz, 608-263-3434, C. Schmidt, 608-262-7973)

NEXT WEEK:

JCSDA and Team Leader Meeting: R. Aune and J. Key will participate in a meeting to discuss data assimilation activities in the Office of Research and Applications (ORA) that are relevant to the new Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA).  The meeting will take place on Monday, March 18 at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Science Center in Camp Springs.  J. Key will participate in an ORA team and division leader meeting March 19-21, also at the NOAA Science Center. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)
