Progress Continues on IHOP Support With GOES Sounder Products: For the upcoming field campaign of the International H2O Program (IHOP) over the U.S. Southern Plains during May and June, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) is already providing preliminary near real-time animations and intercomparisons of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Derived Product Imagery (DPI).  These DPI displays over the most recent six hours are specifically focussed over the Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas Panhandle region for both forecasting assistance as well as product assessment (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/realtime/ihop/).  Increased community exposure to displays of DPI at true full spatial resolution (from single field-of-view retrievals), purposefully enlarged over this IHOP domain, may encourage wider evaluation and acknowledgment of the value-added benefits as well as the deficiencies of current GOES Sounder data.  These efforts are only one component of the CIMSS participation in IHOP (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/ihop/).  (G. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283).

GOES-R Committee Chair Meeting: T. Schmit attended a meeting of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R working group chairs in Boulder, Colorado on March 26. He gave a status report of the Data and New Products group.  He also showed simulated images of Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) the visible/near infrared bands derived from the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data obtained during the Second National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) hyper-spectral workshop. CIMSS Scientist Accepts David Johnson Award: On March 22, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientist Jun Li attended the 45th Annual Goddard Memorial Dinner hosted by National Space Club at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. to accept the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) David Johnson Award for 2002.  Established in 2000, this award is named in honor of David S. Johnson, the first Administrator of NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service.  Jun Li, with 26 other distinguished guests, joined the Head Table during the dinner.  Jun Li was noted for "... his exceptional and unique contributions to the development of sounding retrieval algorithms for the nation's civil operational geostationary and polar-orbiting environmental satellites and leadership in defining the high-spectral resolution sounders for the next generation of satellites".  More than 2500 scientists, administrators, engineers, and guests from the government, research institutes, universities, the military, and the private sector attended this event.  (J. Li , CIMSS, 608-262-3755)

Single Field-of-View GOES Sound Retrievals: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -8 and -10 sounder retrievals at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) were switched from 3x3 fields-of-view (FOV) to single fields-of-view (SFOV) effective 20 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) March 22, 2002. Both the Meteorological Data (MD) files and derived product images (DPI) are output as SFOV. The 3x3 FOV and SFOV DPI are similar but the SFOV panel exhibits more detail in the field. (G. Bayler, 608-265-5356; J. Nelson, 608-263-6013; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

ITOVS Conference Addendance: T. Achtor attended the 12the International TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) Study Conference in Lorne, Victoria, Australia in early March.  He presented a poster by W. Feltz, T. Achtor, J. Li and H.Woolf on the preliminary validation of moisture retrievals from the Advanced TOVS (ATOVS) using the International ATOVS Processing Package (IAPP).  The IAPP temperature and moisture retrieval software was developed for the direct broadcast user community at CIMSS.  The study uses the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) site radiosonde and microwave profiler data for comparison.  While initial results show the IAPP moisture retrievals are preforming well, more cases are necessary to build a better statistical base.  The project will continue to build a year of comparisons.
