Polar Winds Impact Study Extended to 30 Days: The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) study on the impact of the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds on short-range forecasts has been extended to 30 days (March 5 - April 3, 2001).  Niels Bormann and Jean-Noel Thepaut of the ECMWF reported that there continues to be a signficant forecast improvement in the geopotential height for the northern hemisphere and for the Arctic.  Enhanced quality control of wind vectors has also resulted in a forecast improvement over Antarctica.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Abstracts on Future GOES Instruments Submitted for SPIE Conference: Two abstracts were submitted to the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Third International Asia-Pacific Symposium on Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere, Environment, and Space, October 23-27, 2002 in Hangzhou, China.  The titles are "Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) for future Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R and beyond)" and "Advanced Baseline Sounder (ABS) for future Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R and beyond)." The authors are J. Li, T. Schmit, and W. P. Menzel.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Data Link Documentation Completed:  The first round of documentation for the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) data link has been completed.  The documentation will aid in training additional personnel in the procedures used to obtain NCEP data for CIMSS modeling and satellite retrieval work.  Given the dynamic nature of the data acquisition system, the documentation will undoutedly be updated again in the future.  (G. Callan, E/RA2, 608-263-3951)

Demonstration Given to NCAR Visitor: T. Schmit gave a demonstration to David B. Johnson of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), who visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on April 4-5. The demo was an overview of the current Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) sounder (data and products) and the potential of future GOES (both the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Advanced Baseline Sounder(ABS)).  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

ASPT Mid-term Personnel Evaluations Completed: The mid-year performance evaluations of the Advanced Satellite Products Team (ASPT) members have been completed. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
