Experiment on the Use of GOES Sounder Visible Data in Cloud Detection: At the request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Instrument Engineer, a simple experiment was done to evaluate the importance of the GOES Sounder visible data in the cloud mask. First the routine derived product images from the sounder were generated, then the visible data check was "turned off" for a second run. The results are as expected: the daytime visible check is needed to help determine some of the low/warm "maybe cloud" pixels. Those pixels that are obviously clear and obviously cloudy are adequately detected with infrared data alone. For examples see http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/goes8/sounder_visible/goes8_sounder_visible.html. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Review of NASA New Investigator Program Proposal:  A proposal submitted to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Earth Science New Investigator Program (NIP) was reviewed by E. Prins.  The proposal focused on validating and calibrating environmental multi-sensor satellite active fire and burned area products in the boreal forests of Eurasia.  Lessons learned would be used to establish continuity in fire products derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the future National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS).  (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607)

CIMSS Letter of Intent Submitted for JCSDA Support: A pre-proposal for support of data assimilation activities at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was submitted to the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA).  Proposed research tasks include numerical weather prediction (NWP) model assimilation studies, radiative transfer model development, nowcasting, wind assimilation research, and education. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, T. Achtor , CIMSS, 608-263-4206)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

GOES and MODIS Imagery of Great Lakes Advection Fog: Southerly flow of unseasonably warm, moist air across the cold waters of the Great Lakes led to the development of large plumes of advection fog on April 16, 2002. Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-8) allowed the evolution of the fog plumes to be tracked with high temporal accuracy, while higher-resolution imagery from the Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) revealed striking detail in the structure of the fog resulting from complex wind/coastline interactions. Image examples and animations are available on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies GOES Gallery (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/020416/020416.html). (S. Bachmeier , CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

Cooperative Institute Directors Meeting: The 1st Annual National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) Cooperative Institute Retreat was held April 18-19 at the University of Maryland.  NESDIS Office of Research and Applications (ORA) leadership and the Directors and Assistant Directors of the four NESDIS cooperative institutes attended.  S. Ackerman and T. Achtor represented the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS).  Discussions were held on ideas and methods for achieving the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) goals in basic research, technology transfer, diversity recruitment, education and training, and public outreach.  Actions resulting from this meeting will help build collaborations between the cooperative institutes and strengthen their working relationship with NESDIS. Next year's meeting will be held at CIMSS.  (S. Ackerman , CIMSS, 608-263-3647, T. Achtor , CIMSS, 608-263-4206)
