Multi-sensor Analysis of Argentina Wildfires:  From December 2000 through February 2001, large wildfires consumed millions of acres of grasslands in central Argentina producing large smoke palls that extended over the South Atlantic Ocean.  A three-month summary of the fires as detected by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-8) Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) was provided to L. Moxey (graduate student, University of Hawaii) as part of a collaborative effort to assess the affected area.  L. Moxey is comparing multi-spectral satellite data and satellite derived fire and vegetation products from a variety of operational and experimental coarse and high spatial resolution remote sensing instruments.  This study will investigate the applicability of fused multi-sensor remote sensing data for wildfire detection and mitigation, surface change detection, and the creation of environmental impact and hazard maps.  (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607, J. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-263-3434, C. Schmidt, CIMSS, 608-262-7973)

Figure Caption:  This composite image shows wildfires as detected by the GOES Wildfire ABBA from December 1, 2000 through February 28, 2001 in Central Argentina.  Many of the fire pixels were detected as saturated values.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

Polar Winds Paper Presented at Winds Workshop: J. Key of the Office of Research and Applications and D. Santek of the Cooperative Institute for Meteological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave presentations on the polar winds project at the 6th International Winds Workshop held in Madison, Wisconsin (May 7-10).  Key discussed how the unique properties of polar atmospheres affect wind vector height assignment; Santek presented wind retrieval and model impact results for a 30-day case study. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410, C. Velden , CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

 VISITORS:

Visitors from India, China, and the UK: A number of attendees of the 6th International Winds Workshop visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and met with CIMSS and Office of Research and Applications (ORA) scientists.  T. Schmit spoke with Xu Jianmin of the National Satellite Meteorological Center (NSMC), China on current Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) issues and with R. C. Bhatia, Deputy Director General (Satellite) from India, on GOES sounder applications. J. Key discussed the next step in collaborative efforts on polar winds model impact with Niels Bormann of the European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts (ECMWF), Pauline Butterworth of the UK Met Office, and Lars Peter Riishojgaard of the Data Assimilation Office. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Winds Workshop in Madison: The 6th International Winds Workshop was held in Madison, Wisconsin this week (May 7-10).  The event was co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), and the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA). Papers were presented on satellite wind retrieval methods, mesoscale applications of satellite winds, data assimilation, and numerical weather prediction model impact studies.  C. Velden was the local organiser.  (C. Velden , CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
