Local Reprocessing with CLAVR-x: One hundred days National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-16 global Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data were reprocessed through the expanded Clouds from AVHRR (CLAVR-x) system to demonstrate the potential of using the real-time CLAVR-x system to generate climate products. Animations of selected fields can be viewed at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/patmos. The goal of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility of inexpensively reprocessing long periods of global AVHRR data locally. A proposal is being submitted to purchase the necessary hardware to reprocess the entire NOAA-KLM AVHRR data record. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757)

Review of NASA Proposal:  E. Prins reviewed a proposal submitted to the Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling and Analysis Program and the Solar Occultation Satellite Science Team (ACMAP/SOSST) component of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ACMAP research announcement.  The proposal focused on satellite remote sensing of tropospheric aerosol, their properties and radiative effects using SAGE-II (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment) and SAGE-III measurements.  (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607, J. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-263-3434)

PoDAG Meeting: J. Key will attend the Polar DAAC Advisory Group (PoDAG) meeting in Boulder, Colorado.  PoDAG advises the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), a Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC), on matter related to dataset acquisition, distribution, and applications. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Volcanic Dust Cloud Height with CO2 Slicing: For the 23 January 2001 eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano (19.01N and 98.37W) in Mexico, cloud heights were determined using the CO2 (Carbon diOxide) Slicing Technique. Cloud heights were based on radiances from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -8 Sounder. Using reports from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Washington, D.C. descibing the location of the Popocatepetl volcano dust cloud,  the height was tracked for eight time periods on 23 January. The satellite-derived dust cloud height was between 400 and 200 hPa; the   VAAC height estimate was about 200 hPa. (T. Schreiner , CIMSS, 608-263-6754, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, Gary Ellrod, E/RA2,  301-763-8204)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

ABS/HES Simulated Using AIRS:  Researchers at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) are using Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) data to simulate spectral coverage of the future Hyperspectral Environmental Sounder (HES).  AIRS flies aboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Observing System (EOS) satellite Aqua.  Animations of the AIRS bands can be seen on the CIMSS web page:  http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/abs/simulation.html#AIRS
(Fengying Sun, CIMSS, M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146)

Annual GIMPAP Review: T. Achtor (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), S. Ackerman (CIMSS), A. Heidinger (Office of Research and Applications), and J. Key (ORA) took part in the annual review of the research activities supported through the GOES Improved Measurements and Product Assurance Plan (GIMPAP).  The meeting was held in Suitland, Maryland on Tuesday, September 17.  T. Achtor gave a summary of GIMPAP-funded research activities at CIMSS.  (T. Achtor, CIMSS, 608-263-4206, S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647,(A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, J.
