Journal Paper Submitted: A paper titled "Detection and analysis of clear sky, low-level atmospheric temperature inversions with MODIS", by Y. Liu and J. Key, was submitted to the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology.  The paper presents a method for estimating low-level atmospheric temperature inversion strength, defined as the temperature difference across the inversion, and height using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).  Inversion strength can be estimated with an uncertainty of 2-3 oC; the uncertainty in inversion height is 100-200 m.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Questions on the Reflectance of the Polar Regions: J. Key answered questions posed by A. Lam of the Daily Planet, a science news show on the Discovery Channel in Canada, on how much solar energy the polar regions reflect.  The annual average planetary albedo of the Arctic is about 50% (the Antarctic value is  higher) compared to the global average of about 30%.  Ms. Lam also questioned to what degree painting all the roofs in the world white would offset global warming, if at all.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
