NESDIS Award Presented to La Puente High School Teacher:  On June 13, E. Prins presented Duane W. Laursen with a NOAA NESDIS (National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service) Outstanding Teacher Award at a ceremony at La Puente High School in La Puente, California.   The award was presented in recognition of his many years of dedication to teaching science using satellite technology.  At La Puente High School D. Laursen assisted in creating SatCom, a four-year college prep program centering on the development and use of satellite technology, remote sensing, and image processing for Earth system science studies with an emphasis on weather satellites. As a GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) teacher, he also involves his students in comparing remotely sensed data with ground-based measurements. (E. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

NOAA Arctic Science Planning Meeting: J. Key attended a meeting to discuss potential NOAA Arctic science initiatives for fiscal year 2006.  The meeting was called by John Calder of the NOAA Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), and Director of NOAA's Arctic Research Office.  The intention was to assemble an "Arctic team" to consider future program directions for Arctic science within NOAA.  The meeting was held at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Seattle.  J. Key presented an overview of Arctic research being conducted in the Office of Research and Applications.   (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

GOES-R Users Working Group Co-chair Meeting:  A meeting of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Users Working Group chairs was held in Boulder, Colorado on June 10, 2003. As co-chair of the GOES-R Data and New Products sub-group, T. Schmit presented (via telecon) various topics, including the recently developed longwave image simulator, Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES) issues and concerns, and the need for high spatial resolutions. The presentation is available upon request. One of the action items is to investigate options for what is to be re-broadcast in the GOES-R era.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
