ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JULY 11, 2003

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA:

GOES Sounder Cloud Information Now in the Operational NCEP Eta Forecast Model: As of July 8, 2003, the hourly cloud-top information from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) sounder data are being assimilated into the operational National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Eta Data Assimilation System (EDAS). The regional Eta model joins the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) model as two operational models assimilating GOES sounder cloud information to help improve the initial moisture and cloud field.  GOES-12 sounder radiances are currently being tested for a fall implementation in the EDAS. (J. Jung, CIMSS, 301-763-8204, T. Schreiner , CIMSS, 608-263-6754, Y. Lin, NCEP, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

Polar Winds Presentations: D. Santek attended the 9th Meeting of the European Polar Low Working Group in Cambridge, England June 11-13, and gave a presentation on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds project.  He also presented the MODIS winds at the Antarctic Meteorolgical Research Center (AMRC) Annual Meeting held in Madison, Wisconsin, June 23-26.  Details of the real-time winds product and results from model impact studies were given.  (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)

GOES-9 Sounder Cloud Product Now Available:  As of July 11, hourly derived images and text data files of Cloud Top Pressure and Effective Cloud Amount based on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -9 Sounder radiances, located over the western Pacific, are now being routinely generated. The derived imagery can be obtained via Man computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS) software and displayed hourly. Text data files can be accessed via file transfer protocal (ftp) format. (T. Schreiner , CIMSS, 608-263-6754, J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013, G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Telecon on the Modernized Sensor Processing System GOES-12 Test Results: At the request of K. McKenzie of Office of Systems Development (OSD), a telecon was held with to discuss the results from the recent Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-12 Modernized Sensor Processing System (MSPS) test. This was held with representatives from Satellite Operations Control Center (SOCC), OSD and various contractors (including the GOES VARiable (GVAR) contractor). Some, although not all, of the differences of the GVAR data streams that were noted by Wisconsin were explained. Making sure the results are the same between the current SPS and the MSPS is an important validation activity.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146)

Manuscript Accepted for Publication: A paper titled "Combining radio occultation refractivities and
IR/MW radiances to derive temperature and moisture profiles: a simulation study plus early results using CHAMP and ATOVS" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres. The paper is coauthored by E. Borbas, W.P. Menzel, J. Li, and H. Woolf.  (E. Borbas, CIMSS, 608-263-0228)

Undergraduate Student on Polar Winds Project: Sarah Levinson was recently brought onto the polar winds project. She is an undergraduate student in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her primary responsibilities are the day-to-day monitoring of the MODIS and AVHRR polar wind generation and compiling statistics from these products.  (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410, J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Review of Proposals Submitted to NASA's EOS Recompetition:  E. Prins reviewed three proposals submitted to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Office of Earth Science Earth Observing System (EOS) recompetition.  All three proposals focused on EOS MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) active fire and burned area product development and applications.  (E. Prins, E/RA2, 530-271-2256)
