ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA:

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

GOES Imagery and Fire Products Provided to NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory:  Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) enhanced imagery and half-hourly Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) fire products for July 8-9, 2002 were provided to A. Langford of the NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory for a smoke analysis and transport study.  LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) data in Boulder detected multiple layers of smoke including a significant layer in the upper atmosphere.  The GOES imagery and fire products will be used to determine sources and examine possible lofting mechanisms.  (E. Prins, E/RA2, 530-271-2256, C. Schmidt, CIMSS, 608-262-7973) (E. Prins, E/RA2, 530-271-2256)

OSDPD Presentations on AVHRR Cloud Products Operational Status: The Clouds from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) (CLAVR-x) cloud algorithms have been running experimentally in the Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD) for roughly one year.  A. Heidinger attended a meeting concerning the insertion of the cloud mask into the OSDPD AVHRR preprocessor system.  OSDPD will soon decide on the optimal scenario for running the CLAVR-x algorithms in their current and future operational environments.  Office of Research and Applications (ORA) scientists stressed the need to make the cloud mask results available in the 1b data stream to external users to get feedback as soon as possible.  (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757)

Canadian Polar Winds Assimilation Experiment:  Réal Sarrazin of the Data Assimilation and Quality Control Division, Canadian Meteorological Centre (Quebec) has begun testing the forecast impact of the MODIS polar winds in the Canadian 3-dimensional variational analysis (3DVAR) assimilation system. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, J. Key, E/RA2,  608-263-2605, D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)
