ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 15, 2003

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA:

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

CIMSS Personnel Attend GFS Training Session: Two Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) personnel attended a training session on running the latest version of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast System (GFS). This allows CIMSS to extend the data denial impact studies from a regional model domain to a global model domain. (T. Zapotocny, CIMSS, 608-262-0800, J. Jung, CIMSS, 301-763-8204)

GOES Wildfire ABBA Products Provided for SMOCC Air Quality Study in South America:  Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-8) Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) fire products for South America were provided to S. Nandi (National Center for Atmospheric Research, Atmospheric Chemistry Division) for assimilation into the EPA Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) Model to study regional air quality in the Amazon Basin in support of the SMOCC (SMOke aerosols, Clouds, rainfall and Climate) research program.  SMOCC is part of the Large-Scale Atmosphere-Biosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).  The overall goal of SMOCC is to investigate connections between biomass burning aerosols and regional and global climate.  The GOES biomass burning monitoring team at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) is collaborating with S. Nandi to properly assimilate the GOES fire products into the CMAQ model.  (E. Prins, E/RA2, 530-271-2256)

Article on Uses of Satellite Data at Tropical Cyclone Forecast Centers: An article was published in a recent bulletin of the World Meteorological Organization by Elsberry and Velden titled: "A survey of tropical cyclone forecast centres - uses and needs of satellite data". The paper was a result of a survey conducted at the International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones (TC) held in Cairns, Australia last December. The primary objectives of the survey were to document the current most important applications and widely used satellite products at global TC forecast centers, and to poll the TC forecasters on user needs (desireable satellite enhancements and products). The article can be found at:  http://www.wmo.ch/web/www/TCP/Publications/Articles/Elsberry-Velden.html.  (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

Arctic Synthesis Meeting: J. Key attended a retreat on "synthesizing" the Arctic system sponsored by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS).  The primary goal of the retreat was to examine the linkages between all major components and processes of the arctic system, including feedbacks between the physical, biological, and human components. The goal was for the retreat to forge intellectual breakthroughs in understanding how the Arctic works as an integrated system. The retreat was very productive, though much remains to be done. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

Workshop on Satellite Data Applications and Information Extraction: A workshop will be held August 20-21 at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) to begin the planning and development of new satellite products and presentation formats for current and future satellite data for weather forecasters in the field.  The workshop will seek to identify the most effective ways to present essential information to forecasters. Personnel from the National Weather Service, NESDIS, the Army Research Lab, and three universities will participate. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743)
