Workshop on Satellite Data Applications and Information Extraction: A workshop was held August 20-21 at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) to begin the planning and development of new satellite products and presentation formats for current and future satellite data for weather forecasters in the field.  The objective of the workshop was to identify the most effective ways to present essential information to forecasters. Personnel from the National Weather Service, NESDIS, the Army Research Lab, and three universities participated. A report with a summary and recommendations will be available in the near future.  (J. National Academy of Sciences Workshop: A. Heidinger attended a NESDIS-sponsored National Academy of Sciences (NAS) workshop on Climate Data Records from NOAA operational satellites. Presentations were given on the main questions compiled in a NESDIS white paper.  Additional breakout sessions were held to solicit specific feedback.  The results will be compiled into a modified version of the NESDIS white paper later this year. VISITORS:

ORA Deputy Director Visits ASPT and CIMSS: Dr. Alfred Powell, the Deputy Director of the Office of Research and Applications (ORA), visited the Advanced Satellite Products Team (ASPT) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) in Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday, August 19. He described a vision for ORA to CIMSS and ASPT personnel.  Dr. Powell also attended the Workshop on Satellite Data Applications and Information Extraction August 20-21. (J. Future of Infrared Sounding Meeting: A meeting on the "Future of Infrared (IR) Sounding" will be held Monday, August 25, 2003 in Silver Spring, MD. T. Schmit will give a presentation titled "Balancing everything to get the most out of the Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES)-IR." (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
