IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA:

International TOVS Working Group Meeting: The International TOVS Working Group (ITWG) held its 13th Conference, the International TOVS Study Conference (ITSC-XIII) in Ste. Adele, Quebec, Canada from October 29 to November 4.  Scientists from 20 countries and from all weather satellite providers attended the meeting.  Key topics presented include initial research with the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument, weather and climate applications with Advanced Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS), and impact of satellite data on numerical weather prediction (NWP).  Several NWP centers reported that satellite data now has the greatest impact on the analysis.  This was primarily from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A), although most centers are now successfully assimilating AMSU-B with positive impact.  Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists presented 10 oral talks and 11 posters.  (T. Achtor, CIMSS, 608-263-4206)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

Winds POP Meeting:  J. Daniels held a Winds Product Oversight Panel on November 5 in Camp Sprngs, MD. C. Velden, D. Santek, and J. Key participated via telecon.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)

Paper on Mixed-Phase Clouds Submitted to Scientific Journal: A paper titled "The Characterization and Radiative Impact of a Springtime Mixed-Phase Cloudy Boundary Layer observed during SHEBA" was submitted to the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences.  Co-authors are P. Zuidema (University of Colorado, CU), B. Baker (Stratton Park Engineering, SPE), Y. Han (NOAA/ETL), J. Intrieri (ETL), J. Key (NOAA/NESDIS), P. Lawson (SPE), S. Matrosov (CU), M. Shupe (Science and Technology Corp.), R. Stone (CU), T. Uttal (ETL).  The paper describes the retrieval of cloud microphysical properties with surface-based radar and lidar instruments, as well as the radiative effect of mixed-phase clouds during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) experiment.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Extended Abstracts for AMS Annual Meeting: An extended abstract titled "An Objective Nowcasting Tool That Incorporates Geostationary Satellite Measurements", was prepared for the Symposium on Planning, Nowcasting, and Forecasting in the Urban Zone, to be held this January at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting in Seattle. The authors are R. M. Aune and R. Petersen. An extended abstract on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) was prepared for the 20th International Conference on Interactive Information and Processing Systems (IIPS) for Meteorology, Oceanography, and Hydrology. The title is "Study of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the GOES-R and Beyond".  The authors are T. J. Schmit, J. Li, M. M Gunshor, C. C Schmidt, P. Menzel, J. J. Gurka, and J. M. Sieglaff. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
