Satellite Data Applications Workshop Report Available:  The final report from the first Workshop on Satellite Data Applications and Information Extraction (WSDAIE) has been completed and is available on the workshop web page at http://stratus.ssec.wisc.edu/meetings/data_ws/ (click the report link).  The  workshop was held in August 2003 in Madison, Wisconsin, hosted at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS).  It brought together satellite data providers, developers, and users.  The WSDAIE participants came with a variety of expertise and experience, including staff from NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and National Weather Service (NWS) as well as CIMSS and other academic and government agencies.  The workshop  contributed to improved communication between data producers and data users. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:

Hurrican Isabel Post-Analysis Workshop: A small workshop on Hurricane Isabel post-analysis was held at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), Hurricane Research Division, on December 4-5, 2003. The purpose of the workshop was to exchange ideas on the intensity behavior and structural variations of Isabel as it crossed the Atlantic before making landfall on Cape Hatteras in September. The meeting was attended by several scientists, including Chris Velden and James Kossin from CIMSS, and Ray Zehr from NESDIS/RAMMT, whom brough interesting satellite datasets to the attention of the workshop participants. It is hoped a collaborative effort will shed light on the Isabel intensity behavior with the help of multispectral satellite signatures. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, J. Kossin, CIMSS, 608-265-5356, R. Zehr, E/RA2)

VISITORS:

NCAR Collaborator Visits CIMSS: Dr. David B. Johnson of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on December 2-3. Dr. Johnson is collaborating with J. Mecikalski and W. Feltz on aviation weather products. T. Schmit met with Dr. Johnson and summarized the status of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI).  Other topics of discussion were   turbulence and volcanic ash detection from the ABI. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

NEXT WEEK:

USWRP Workshop
: R. Aune will attend a U.S. Weather Research Program workshop on mesoscale observing networks and real-time local numerical weather prediction in Boulder, Colorado. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)
