ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING APRIL 16, 2004

IN THE PRESS:

Seasonal article on Tornado Awareness: An article promoting tornado awareness in one of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) student newspapers, the Daily Cardinal, was written by N. Zachar for the April 14, 2004 issue and entitled: “Tornado season touches down in Wisconsin”.  G. Wade (Advanced Satellite Products Team (ASPT)) was among the local contributors to Zachar’s inquiries, along with assistant state climatologist E. Hopkins, UW Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) professor G. Tripoli, and Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) researcher D. Herndon. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743)

NOAA at Science Fair Night: R. Aune and K. Strabala ran a booth at the annual Science Fair Night at Elm Lawn Elementary School in Middleton, Wisconsin.  The theme of the booth was "Using Satellites to Understand Our Earth".  Two projectors were used show examples of satellite imagery from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), and to demonstrate how forecasters use satellite data in computers to forecast the weather.  In addition, a workstation was available for kids to try their hand at making a forecast using Vis5D, a modern three-dimensional visualization tool.  (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071 and K. Strabala, CIMSS, 608-263-8752)

Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation Science Workshop: J. Key gave a presentation entitled “Polar winds data assimilation experiments” at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) workshop on April 15, 2004 (Camp Springs, MD).  The project, with co-investigators C. Velden and D. Santek (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, University of Wisconsin), is assessing the impact of wind information obtained from polar-orbiting imagers on numerical weather forecasts. Experiments are being performed at a number of numerical weather prediction centers, including the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Abstract Submitted to Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography for Invited Talk: An abstract entitled "Cloud classification and cloud property retrieval from MODIS and AIRS observations" was submitted to American Meteorology Society's 13th Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography for an invited talk.  Co-authors are Jun Li, W. Paul Menzel, Timothy J. Schmit, Zhenglong Li and James J. Gurka. (J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)

Manuscript Review: J. Key reviewed a paper for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing.  The paper described a new method for identifying motion tracers in satellite imagery. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
