MURI Meeting in Madison, WI: The 4th Annual Workshop on Hyperspectral Science of UW-Madison Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI), Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS), and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R, was held April 27-28, 2004 in Madison, Wisconsin. Among others, these talks were given: "Hyperspectral IR clear and cloudy sounding retrieval study", "National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) GOES-R Risk Reduction Plan Overview", and "GOES-R HES Requirements". The speakers were J. Li, W. P. Menzel and T. Schmit, respectively. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755, W. P. Menzel, E/RA2, 608-263-4930)

Manuscript Submitted to the Journal of Climate:  A paper entitled "Global Daytime Distribution of Multilayer Cloud from AVHRR" was submitted to the Journal of Climate.  The paper presents the results of an application of a recently developed algorithm to many months of data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR).  This is the first global and seasonal view of multilayer cloud from a satellite.  (A. Heidinger, 608-263-6757 and Mike Pavolonis, CIMSS, 608-263-9597)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Review of Suomi Scholarship Applicants:  From scientific prize money, the late Professor Vern Suomi, founder of the University of Wisconsin (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and often known as the “father of satellite meteorology”, established a scholarship program for earth science undergraduate education at any UW System school.  With administration by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), this year’s scholarship committee of K. Strabala (SSEC), S. Bachmeier (SSEC), and G. Wade (NOAA) evaluated and discussed the 16 applications and recommended 5 applicants for further and final consideration by CIMSS staff (Director S. Ackerman, L. Avila, and T. Achtor) who selected 4 applicants for awards. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743)

Abstract Submitted for SPIE Symposium: An abstract entitled "Vertical resolution study on the GOES-R Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES)" has been submitted as an oral presentation to the SPIE's Fourth International Asia-Pacific Environmental Remote Sensing Symposium, Applications with Weather Satellites II, to be held from November 8-12, 2004 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The co-authors are Jun Li, Fang Wang, Timothy, J. Schmit, W. Paul Menzel, and James Gurka. (J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)

Abstracts Submitted for SPIE Symposium: Abstracts entitled "Cloud classification products derived from operational imagers" and "The global distribution of cloud type from operational polar-orbiting imagers: The past and present (AVHRR) and the future (VIIRS)" were submitted to The International Society for Optical Engineering's Fourth International Asia-Pacific Environmental Remote Sensing Symposium for poster presentations.  Co-authors on both abstracts are Michael J. Pavolonis and Andrew K. Heidinger. (M. Pavolonis, CIMSS, 608-263-9597, A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757)

Property Inventory Completed:  The annual U.S. Department of Commerce Personal Property Physical Inventory Report for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service's (NESDIS) Office of Research and Applications team in Madison, WI was provided to G. Elsea at the NOAA Central Administrative Support Center (CASC), with all property accounted for.  This baseline inventory for the end of the 2nd quarter of fiscal year 2004 will now be updated for additions, transfers, and excesses by the new team custodian, G. Wade. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743)
