ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JULY 9, 2004

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA:

New Chair of the Climate and Cryosphere Project's Observation Products Panel: J. Key was named the new Chair of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) project's Observation Products Panel (OPP).  The CliC Observation Products Panel (OPP) maintains expert knowledge on the current and past states of the cryosphere as part of the climate system, based on available observations. It also maintains expertise in the techniques that have been and are being used to observe climatically important aspects of the cryosphere.  For more information on CliC, see http://clic.npolar.no. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Polar Winds Have Positive Impact in NCEP Model: The June 2004 Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation JCSDA Quarterly newsletter described results of impact studies using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds product in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast Model (GFS).  Polar winds generated by NESDIS using observations from the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite were shown to  have a positive impact on forecasts in the GFS (3DVAR assimilation system).  These are preliminary results; tests to quantify the impact will continue. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, J. Jung, CIMSS, 301-763-8204, T. Zapotocny, CIMSS, 608-262-0800, J. Daniels, E/RA2, D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Paper on Recent Innovations in Wind Retrievals Accepted for Publication: A paper titled "Recent Innovations in Deriving Tropospheric Winds from Meteorological Satellites" was accepted for publication, subject to minor revision, in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.  The paper was coauthored by Christopher Velden (Cooperative Institite for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), Jaime Daniels (NESDIS), David Stettner (CIMSS), David Santek (CIMSS), Jeff Key (NESDIS), Jason Dunion (University of Miami), Kenneth Holmlund (EUMETSAT), Gail Dengel (CIMSS), Wayne Bresky (Raytheon Technology and Scientific Services) and Paul Menzel (NESDIS). The paper describes several new innovations in satellite-produced wind technologies, derivation methodologies, and products. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Abstract on GOES-R Submitted for the 29th Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop: An abstract on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R was submitted for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s 29th Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop (18-22 October, 2004, Madison, WI). The title is "Improvements of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R series for climate monitoring". The authors are Timothy, J. Schmit, W. Paul Menzel, James Gurka, Elaine M. Prins, Mathew M. Gunshor and Jun Li.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
