Abstracts Submitted to the American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting: The following abstracts were submitted to the American Meteorology Society (AMS) 85th Annual Meeting, 21st International Conference on Interactive Information Processing Systems (IIPS) for Meteorology, Oceanography, and Hydrology, to be held January 9-13, 2005 in San Diego, California: "Retrieval of cloud microphysics from blended MODIS cloud products and AIRS radiance measurements" by Chian-Yi Liu, Jun Li, and Timothy J. Schmit,  "Imager capability on cloud classification using MODIS" by Zhenglong Li, Jun Li, and W. Paul Menzel, and "Trade-off study on vertical resolution for high spectral resolution sounder" by Fang Wang, Jun Li, and Timothy J. Schmit. (C.-Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-262-1023)

VISITORS:

Atmospheric Turbulence Experts Visit CIMSS: A group of atmospheric turbulence experts visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)/Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) on July 22-23, 2004.  Dr. Robert Sharman, Dr. Todd Lane, Dr. Rod Frehlich, and Mr. Dave Johnson of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) collaborated with the CIMSS/SSEC Advanced Satellite Aviation-weather Program (ASAP) team to discuss turbulence as an aviation hazard.  Among topics discussed were how satellite information can facilitate in turbulence detection, the availability of high resolution numerical weather prediction output containing turbulence from NCAR for simulation of future infrared hyperspectral data, and to exchange information about current research being conducted in both groups.  Dr. Todd Lane presented a CIMSS/SSEC seminar titled "An introduction to some aviation turbulence research at NCAR". (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283)

NEXT WEEK:

Upcoming CIMSS 5-year Review: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) will be hosting the NOAA 5-year review of the Cooperative Agreement August 10-12, 2004. Frances Holt, Al Powell, Marie Colton, Colleen Hartman, Stan Wilson, Mike Nelson, Marilyn Moll, Paul Menzel, and Jeff Key of NOAA are expected to attend.  (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)
