Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies 5-year Review: NOAA held its formal 5-year review of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) program on August 10-12, 2004. The Science Review took place on August 10-11; the Administrative Review was held on August 12.  Frances Holt, Al Powell, Marie Colton, Stan Wilson, Mike Nelson, Marilyn Moll, Paul Menzel, and Jeff Key of NOAA participated in the reviews.  The CIMSS review was presented by Director Steve Ackerman and Executive Director Tom Achtor.  Several CIMSS science leaders and SSEC Director Hank Revercomb also attended. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Manuscript on MODIS/AIRS Cloud Microphsical Properties Submitted:  A manuscript entitled "Retrieval of cloud microphysical properties from MODIS and AIRS'' has been submitted to the Journal of Applied Meteorology.  This study is relevant to the data from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES) on the GOES-R.  The co-authors are Jun Li, Allen Huang, and Chian-Yi Liu (CIMSS), Tim Schmit and Paul Menzel (ORA), Ping Yang and Heli Wei (Texas A&M U.). Manuscript Review: M. Pavolonis completed a review of a manuscript that described two satellite imagery techniques for differentiating between cloud and snow during the day for the Journal of Applied Meteorology, which is published by the American Meteorological Society. Hyperspectral Workshop: The 4th NOAA Hyperspectral Workshop will be held August 17-19, 2004 in Madison, WI. The main goal of the workshop is to explore broadband adequacy versus hyperspectral necessity for environmental characterizations (land, ocean, atmosphere).
