ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Manuscripts on Forecast Impact Accepted for Publication: Two manuscripts by Tom H. Zapotocny, W. Paul Menzel, James A. Jung, and James P. Nelson III entitled “A Four Season Impact Study of Rawinsonde, GOES and POES Data in the Eta Data Assimilation System.  Part I: The Total Contribution" and "Part II: Contribution of the Components" were accepted for publication in Weather and Forecasting.  These manuscripts investigate the 24-hr forecast impact of many of the data types used in the the EDAS operationally. In Part I, the aggregate contribution of all GOES, POES and rawinsonde data is examined.  In part II, the aggregate contributions are broken down into the two components of GOES and rawinsonde data (mass and wind) as well as the five components of POES data (AMSU, HIRS, MSU, SSM/I PW and SSM/I wind).  The results indicate that when cumulatively summed over the four seasons, all data type provide at least some positive contribution to the 24-hr forecast.  Rawinsonde data routinely provides the largest contribution to temperature fields, while GOES and POES contributions are largest for wind and moisture forecasts.  (T.H. Zapotocny, CIMSS, 608-262-0800; W.P. Menzel, NOAA/NESDIS/ORA, 608-263-4930; J.A. Jung, CIMSS, 301-763-8204; and J.P. Nelson III, CIMSS, 608-263-6013)

Manuscript Submitted to International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) Symposium: A manuscript entitled "Veritical resolution study on the GOES-R Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES)" has been submitted to Applications with Weather Satellites II of the SPIE Fourth International Asia-Pacific Environmental Remote Sensing symposium to be held November 8-11, 2004 in Honolulu. The co-authors are Jun Li, Fang Wang, Timothy J. Schmit, W. Paul Menzel, and James J. Gurka. (J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

National Weather Association Invited Talk: T. Schmit will attend the National Weather Association (NWA) annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, where he will give an invited presentation on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The talk is titled "Operational benefits of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R". (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Second Satellite Data Exploitation Workshop: The second satellite data exploitation workshop will be held at the National Weather Association (NWA) annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, October 16-21.  The workshop, titled "Toward Better Utilization of Satellite Information", will be held on Tuesday.  G. Wade, R. Aune, and T. Schmit of the Advanced Satellite Products Branch will participate. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop in Madison: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 29th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, October 18-22, 2004.  Several posters by Advanced Satellite Products Branch and  Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists will be presented.

Antarctica: J. Key will travel to McMurdo, Antarctica, to implement a system that will generate polar winds and other real-time products from direct broadcast (DB) satellite data collected at McMurdo.  These products will be used on-site by weather forecasters and will be available for assimilation in numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems. The primary motivation for implementing this system is to improve the timeliness of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds product for NWP.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
