Intercalibration of Fengyun-2B Infrared Data with the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder: In close collaboration with scientists at the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) a sample of Fengyun-2B (FY-2B) geostationary data was obtained at the Cooperative Institute of Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) along with the spectral response function and a 0-255 count lookup table for the infrared window (IRW) channel.  The spectral response functions (SRFs) were used to calculate coefficients for converting radiance to brightness temperature and high spectral-resolution Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) polar-orbiting data were convolved with the SRF so that AIRS and FY-2B could be effectively compared.  A brightness temperature difference of 2.3 K was found for this one case, a relatively good result given the inherent lack of calibration accuracy on FY-2B.  CIMSS plans to obtain and intercalibrate FY-2C, the recently launched follow-up to FY-2B, when data becomes available through the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data Center. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Visit to NOAA Facility at South Pole Station: J. Key visited South Pole Station and met with NOAA Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL) Atmospheric Research Observatory (ARO) scientist Brian Vasel.  Validation of satellite-derived products such as surface temperature, albedo, and radiation with ARO instruments was discussed.  Key also met with Raytheon Polar Services meteorology coordinator Kathie Hill.  Ms. Hill provided a tour of the facilities and an overview of the Meteorology Department at South Pole.
