National Research Council Panel Formed to Discuss Fate of TRMM Satellite: A National Academy of Sciences National Research Council (NRC) panel was formed to evaluate the issue of maintaining and extending the lifetime of NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. The panel met in Washington, D.C. with the task of compiling evidence on current applications of TRMM data, focusing on both research and operational uses. The committee will file an interim report to NASA by the end of the year with findings and recommendations on the issue of extending TRMM operations to the point of controlled re-entry (approximately one year), or up to the point of total fuel loss and uncontrolled reentry (approximately five years). Invited Talk presented at Fourth SPIE Asia-Pacific Remote Sensing Conference in Hawaii:  A. Heidinger presented a talk on the new cloud climatology from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x).  The results  indicate that the PATMOS-x cloud climatology agrees well in many ways with existing climatologies. One important result from this analysis is the lack of consensus in the trends in cloud amount over the past twenty years in many regions from the existing global satellite-derived cloud climatologies.  Further analysis using new advanced sensors are being undertaken to explain this lack of consensus. Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center (SPoRT) Meeting: T. Schmit participated in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center (SPoRT) Science Advisory Committee annual meeting on November 18, 2004 in Huntsville, AL. The meeting included a discussion of accomplishments and future plans. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
