ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 7, 2005

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA

First Gridded Statistical Interpolation User's Orientation: R. Aune attended the 1st Gridded Statistical Interpolation (GSI) User's Orientation at the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) in Camp Springs.  Attendees learned how to acquire and implement the GSI, which is the new 3-dimensional variational analysis system that is about to be implemented operationally in both the regional and global modeling systems.  It will have the capability to assimilate vast  quantities of observations from in situ, as well as, space-based platforms.  Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists will be implementing the GSI along with the next-generation operational mesoscale model (WRF-NMM), and will be using the code to test satellite data assimilation algorithms.  (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)

Satellite Image of Post-Tsunami Wave Features: Imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiomter (MODIS) shows wave features in the surf zone of Sri Lanka after the tsunami hit on December 26, 2004.  The figure below shows enhanced MODIS visible data (bands 1 and 2) one week before (left) and within two hours after (right) the tsunami.  The circular and linear patterns may be the result of waves reflecting off obstacles and the island. The features are more likely differences in turbidity caused by the tsunami stirring up the sediment on the shallow water shelf surrounding the island, rather than actual surface waves. The distance from shore to the bow wave in the middle of the image is about 16 km. The distance between waves is about 6 km. (D. Santek, SSEC)
