ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 21, 2005

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, ORA

International Polar Year Expressions of Intent Submitted: J. Key submitted two Expressions of Intent (EoI) to the International Polar Year (IPY) International Planning Group (IPG).  The IPY will be an intense, internationally coordinated campaign of research in the 2007-2008 time frame.  It was formally established by the International Council for Science (ICSU).  IPY activities are being coordinated internationally by the IPY IPG (http://www.ipy.org) and nationally by the U.S. IPY Committee (http://www.us-ipy.org).  One of the two EoIs was for satellite product development and satellite data assimilation.  It was one of a dozen or so EoIs from NOAA.  The other EoI was on behalf of the World Climate Research Programme's (WCRP) Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) project to assess the state of the cryosphere. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

MODIS Imagery Shows Sediment Off Coastal California: A comparison of Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) natural color images from December 2, 2004 versus January 12, 2005 showed the offshore flow of sediment from the Los Angeles basin into the adjacent Pacific Ocean, after that portion of California experienced record rainfall, flooding, and landslides during early January 2005: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/modis/autumn/lax_aqua_anim.html. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

GOES Sounder Cloud Top Pressure Data to Assist Defense Tests over Hawaii: Missile tests using airborne optical sensors are sensitive to high altitude cirrus, which degrades their "viewing" capabilities. As the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Cloud Top Pressure (CTP) information is routinely generated over Hawaii, it will be used to help detect high altitude cirrus and assist Missile Defense program tests scheduled to take place in March 2005. (T. Schreiner, CIMSS, 608-263-6754)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

ABI Manuscript Resubmitted: The manuscript "Introducing the next-generation advanced baseline imager (ABI) on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R" was re-submitted. The manuscript is available upon request. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

GOES-R Telecons: On January 21, T. Schmit participated in the bi-weekly Atmosphere, Ocean, Land (AOL) Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) meeting via telecon. A host of issues were discussed, including the pro's and con's of a distributed system architecture Geostationary Environmental Operational Satellite (GOES)-R system. T. Schmit also took part in a short telecon with NOAA/NESDIS/OSD to clarify the need to archive level 0 data in the GOES-R era. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
