New AVHRR Reflectance Calibration Offers More Intersatellite Consistency:  Part of ORA's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Data Stewardship effort involves improving the calibration of the reflectance channels, which have no onboard calibration source.   One of the big challenges to using AVHRR for climate studies is to develop a consistent radiometric record from the various AVHRR instruments. We have developed new techniques to calibrate the afternoon instruments and transfer the calibration from the afternoon instruments to the morning instruments.   During periods when the afternoon satellites are replaced (e.g., NOAA-11 to NOAA-14) and the morning satellite is continuous (e.g., NOAA-12), the smoothness of the inferred morning instrument reflectance calibration can be used to measure the relative continuity of the reflectance calibration between the two afternoon instruments.  As the attached figure shows, the new calibration derived from the AVHRR Pathfinder Atmosphere Extended (PATMOS-x) project produces a NOAA-12 AVHRR channel 1 calibration curve that is much more continuous over the NOAA-11 and NOAA-14 transition (which occurred in 1994) than the published calibrations used in NASA Land Pathfinder (labeled VS) and the previous AVHRR Pathfinder Atmosphere (labeled RCS).  This methodology can also play a role in the verification of the radiometric continuity of AVHRR's follow-on instrument, the Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).  (A. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD

Abstract submitted to SPIE Annual Meeting:  An abstract entitled "Using ABI to help HES for cloud property and atmospheric sounding retrieval" has been submitted to Weather and Environmental Satellites II of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)'s annual meeting to be held in San Diego, California from July 31 to August 4, 2005.  Coauthors are Jun Li, Chian-Yi Liu, Timothy J. Schmit, James J. Gurka and W. Paul Menzel.  (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)

Other Meetings and Telecons:
(None)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

T. Schmit will give an invited talk at an Optical Society of America  (OSA) conference in Alexandria, VA on January 31, 2005. The meeting is "Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding of the Environment". The title of the presentation is "Applications of the GOES-R HES (Hyperspectral Environmental Suite) Infrared measurements". The co-authors are James Gurka, W. P. Menzel, and Jun Li  of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS).

A. Heidinger will attend and chair the VIIRS Operational Algorithm Team meeting in California.

J. Key will attend the NOAA Arctic Climate Science Priorities workshop in Silver Spring, February 2-3.  The goal of the meeting is to develop a set of recommendations to guide NOAA priorities and plans for the Arctic over the 2006-20012 timeframe, including near-term plans and initial coordination with the International Polar Year (IPY).
