CIMSS Summer Workshop for High School Students:  The 13th Workshop on Atmospheric, Earth, and Space Science was hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) campus July 24-28, 2005, for ten high school students from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.  Numerous CIMSS and UW staff presented a variety of talks, demonstrations, and activity sessions for the students on topics of meteorology and forecasting (including satellite applications), geology, earth remote sensing, and astronomy.  Fields trips included visits to a major local television station, the local National Weather Service (NWS) office (in Sullivan, WI), and a particularly geologically interesting state park (Devil’s Lake).  (M. Mooney, CIMSS, 608-265-2123; G. S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743)

Paper on Daytime Global Cloud Typing Published:  A paper titled "Daytime global cloud typing from AVHRR and VIIRS: Algorithm description, validation, and comparisons" was published in the July issue of the Journal of Applied Meteorology. The paper, by M. Pavolonis (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), A. Heidinger (NESDIS), and T. Uttal (ETL) describes, validates, and compares three automated multi-spectral techniques used to infer cloud type from daytime satellite imagery. (M. Pavolonis, CIMSS, 608-263-9597, A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

Low-Level Inversion Climatology Paper Submitted: A paper titled "Characteristics of satellite-derived clear-sky atmospheric temperature inversion strength in the Arctic, 1980-1996" was submitted to the Journal of Climate.  The paper, by Y. Liu (CIMSS), J. Key (NESDIS), A. Schweiger (U. Washington) and J. Francis (Rutgers U.), describes the spatial and temporal distribution of low-level atmospheric temperature inversion strength across the Arctic as estimated with the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS). (Y. Liu, CIMSS, J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

Abstract Submitted to 86th AMS Annual Meeting: An abstract titled "Synergism of ABI and HES for Atmospheric and Cloud Products" has been submitted to the Second GOES-R/NPOESS Symposium of the 86th AMS Annual Meeting, January 29 – February 2, 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. Authors are Jun Li, Chian-Yi Liu (CIMSS/UW-Madison), Tim Schmit (ORA/NESDIS), James J. Gurka (OSD/NESDIS) and W. Paul Menzel (ORA/NESDIS). (J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755) [Editor's note: Other abstracts were also submitted by CIMSS scientists but are not listed here.]
