Paper on Advanced Baseline Imager Published: A manuscript titled "Introducing the next-generation advanced baseline imager (ABI) on GOES-R" was published in the August 2005 Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). The authors are T. J. Schmit, M. M. Gunshor, W. P. Menzel, Jun Li, S. Bachmeier, and J. J. Gurka. The paper, which is available upon request, summarizes how the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) will begin a new era in geostationary environmental remote sensing with more spectral bands, faster imaging, and higher spatial resolution than the current imager. Many products that will be derived from the ABI data are discussed. Sample images showing the improved spatial resolution are available at  http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/abi/animation1_may_2000s.gif (animated gif, shown below) or http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/abi/goes_abi_irw.html (java applet). Figure caption: Improved spatial resolution of the infrared window bands of the ABI demonstrated from MODIS data (a) for a convective cloud case. Note the colder cloud-top brightness temperatures and the sharper “Enhanced V” signature located over central Tennessee on 25 May 2000. Also of interest are the concentric anvil-layer waves observable in the higher spatial resolution infrared (IR) data, associated with rapidly intensifying convection. These waves are not evident in (b), the current GOES imager data.
