IDEA Article Featured on Cover of BAMS:  An article titled "Improving National Air Quality Forecasts With Satellite Aerosol Observations" appeared in the September 2005 issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) and was featured on the cover.  This article is an overview of the multi-agency (NASA, NOAA, EPA, University of Wisconsin-Madison, private sector) partnership to Infuse satellite Data into Environmental Applications (IDEA) in an effort to improve air quality assessment, management, and prediction.  The focus of the article is a demonstration study that was conducted in September 2003.  In this study NASA, NOAA, and the EPA demonstrated an on-line prototype tool for improving fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) air quality forecasts using a combination of surface observations, model output, and satellite derived products including Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol optical thickness (AOD) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) fires. In response to positive feedback from EPA's AIRNow air quality managers and forecasters, the prototype was expanded and transitioned to the Cooperative Institute for Meterological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) in 2004.  (A. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

Nowcast Briefing for the IFPS Science Steering Team: R. Aune briefed the Interactive Forecast Preparation System (IFPS) Science Steering Team (ISST) on the objective nowcasting analysis system under development at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Studies (CIMSS).  The system analyzes observations from the GOES sounders to produce zero to six hour diagnostics for nowcasting.  The ISST is tasked with assessing the feasability of all aspects of the digital forecast office of the future. Recently, they have begun to look at objective analysis tools under development, with applications to nowcasting. (R. Aune/ER2 608-262-1071, robert.aune@noaa.gov)
