National Academy of Sciences Study on the Future of Rainfall Measuring Missions: This week, the National Resource Council (NRC) hosted an inaugural meeting of a committee commissioned by NOAA to study the future of space-based rainfall measuring missions, with a focus on readiness and applications for the upcoming Global Precipitation Mission (GPM). This is the same committee that published an NAS/NRC report on recommendations for the Tropicap Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). In this phase the committee is tasked to recommend to NOAA the potential applications of GPM data for operations, and to suggest pre-launch preparations for the early exploitation of GPM data when it becomes available. Both NASA and NOAA representatives were invited and gave their perspectives on GPM and the NRC study objectives. The committee's final report is due next summer. (C.Velden, CIMSS, 608 262-9168)
