Clear Sky Brightness Temperature Product to go Operational: On November 14, 2005, the Satellite Products and Services Review Board (SPSRB) approved that the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager Clear Sky Brightness Temperature (CSBT) product to become operational in December 2005. The CSBT is a cloud-free average over 50 km by 50 km areas. The CSBT product provides clear sky information for the five spectral bands from both the GOES-East and GOES–West imagers. This product was requested by National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) and the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for assimilation into global weather prediction models to better analyze the initial atmospheric state. Significance
This product helps to better analyze the initial atmospheric state in global models for upper-level moisture.

NOAA Mission Goals:
Serves society’s needs for weather and water information

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR

New CIMSS Cooperative Agreement Proposal: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) submitted a new Cooperative Agreement proposal to NOAA/NESDIS.  The proposal period will extend from January 2006 through June 2010.  CIMSS completed a highly successful 5 year review of its science program and administration in August 2004 as part of the pre-proposal process.  Since its founding in 1980, CIMSS has worked closely with NOAA on remote sensing programs, from instrument design and data evaluation to algorithm development and data assimilation.  CIMSS has worked collaboratively with STAR and OSDPD in the transition of more than 20 research projects to operations.  More then 40% of CIMSS publications in referreed journals are co-authored with NOAA scientists. CIMSS currently supports more than 20 graduate students working on research projects, which provides new scientists to help fulfill NOAA's strategic mission. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)
ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

ASPB Completes the Combined Federal Campaign in Madison:  The six member Advanced Satellite Projects Branch (ASPB) fully participated in this year’s Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).  In addition, three other NOAA retirees or colleagues in Madison, WI, contributed.  The nine contributions were provided to the United Way of Dane County, the local CFC agency. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov)

GOES-R Algorithm Working Group Meeting: Several members of the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) particpated in the kick-off of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Workshop November 16-18, 2005 in Falls Church, VA. The workshop was hosted by Mitretek.  T. Schmit, A. Heidinger, M. Pavolonis, and J. Key serve on AWG Application Teams.  Additionally, Heidinger is chair of the Clouds Application Team; Schmit serves on the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).   (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov, A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, M.
