Paper on Arctic Land Surface Changes Published: A paper titled "Role of land surface changes in Arctic summer warming" was published in the journal Science (October 28, 2005). The paper, co-authored by F. S. Chapin (University of Alaska), M. Sturm, M.C. Serreze, J.P. McFadden, J.R. Key, A.H. Lloyd, A.D. McGuire, T.S. Rupp, A.H. Lynch, J.P. Schimel, J. Beringer, H.E. Epstein, L.D. Hinzman, G. Jia, C.-L. Ping, K. Tape, W.L. Chapman, E. Euskirchen, C.D.C. Thompson, J.M. Welker, and D.A. Walker, shows that terrestrial changes in summer albedo contribute substantially to recent high-latitude warming trends. Pronounced terrestrial summer warming in arctic Alaska correlates with a lengthening of the snow-free season that has increased atmospheric heating locally by about 3 watts per square meter per decade, similar in magnitude to the regional heating expected over multiple decades from a doubling of atmospheric CO2. The continuation of current trends in shrub and tree expansion could further amplify this atmospheric heating by two to seven times.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

Sample Imager and Sounder Scenarios from a GOES Positioned at 60 W: After its operational mission is complete, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-10 may be repositioned to 60 West longitude to provide scans covering Central and South America. As a member of the Earth Observation Partnership for the Americas (EOPA) team, T. Schmit produced a memo that demonstrated sample GOES imager and sounder scan scenarios. These proposed scan scenarios were suggested as a starting point for further discussions with the various regions. The schedules were based on requests made at the Direct Readout Conferences, the current coverage from GOES-East, and an effort to keep the schedules simple.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

T. Schmit will attend the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) System Preliminary Design Review (PDR) on December 13 -15, 2005 in  Fort Wayne, IN. The PDR is needed before detailed design work can begin.
