MODIS Product Workshop in Norway: Personnel from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS; P. Antonelli, L. Gumley, K. Strabala, A. Huang) and the Advanced Satellite Products Team (J. Key) gave a 3-day training workshop on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data products at the Andoya Rocket Range in Norway.  Participants came from institutions across Norway, including Kongsberg Satellite Services, Kongsberg Spacetec, the University of Oslo, the University of Svalbard, the University of Tromso, the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, the Norwegian Institute for Water Research, the Norwegian Computing Center, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, and the Norwegian Space Center. The workshop was initiated by John Overton of the Integrated Program Office (IPO), who also attended. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

Cloud Data Provided for European Intercomparison Effort:  Data from NOAA's Clouds from AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) System was provided to the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) for a cloud product comparison effort.  The goal of this effort to compare all available cloud products over Europe on two days where intensive in-situ observations were taken.  The analysis will be presented and discussed at a workshop to be held in May in Norrkoping, Sweden.  The CLAVR-x data was generated using the observations from the NOAA-18 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the products provided include cloud mask, cloud type, cloud height and cloud emissivity.  (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

Invited Lecture at University of Wisconsin:  R. Aune gave a lecture at the Chaos and Complex Systems Seminar, a weekly, campus-wide, interdisciplinary seminar series at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, on the new sciences of chaos and complexity.  His talk, titled " Improving short-term numerical weather forecasts using observations from satellites", focused on how observations from the GOES satellites can be used to guide the development of physics and dynamics in a regional numerical prediction model.  The presentation included a summary of numerical weather prediction concepts, focusing on limitations set by non-linearity, error growth and  predictability, and concluded with a brief history of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) forecast model and how GOES products were used to improve its accuracy. (R.Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, robert.aune@noaa.gov)

GOES-12 Imager Calibration of the 4 Micrometer Band Near Satellite Eclipse: A Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -12 imager 4 micrometer spectral band was affected by several poor space look values. These images were limited to one time period per day near 06 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). The affected radiances near the equator did affect the experimental GOES Cloud-Top Pressure (CTP) derived image. A GOES Incident Report (GIR) was generated by D. Han to address this issue via additional quality control of the space look data. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; D. Han, OSO; M. Gunshor, CIMSS; X. Wu, STAR)

Integrated Program Office Cloud Research Review Meeting: The NOAA Integrated Program Office (IPO) held a review of all projects it funds that deal with cloud remote sensing from NPOESS.  A. Heidinger presented the results from his project dealing with cloud remote sensing using the data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).  The meeting provided a forum for multi-instrument discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the NPOESS platform as a cloud observing system.
