Operational Assimilation of Direct Broadcast MODIS Winds at FNMOC: On March 15, 2006, the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceangraphy Center (FNMOC) began operational use of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds that are generated on-site in McMurdo, Antarctica.  The McMurdo polar winds system uses MODIS data collected by the National Science Foundation's direct broadcast (DB) system.  FNMOC is using the winds in NOGAPS (Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System), where the McMurdo DB winds are "superobbed" together with the previously operational “bent-pipe” MODIS winds.  However, the DB winds are available sooner, allowing for significantly more wind data to enter into the early model runs. Observation versus model background statistics for the DB winds appear comparable to the bent-pipe winds. Other weather prediction centers are expected to use the winds operationally after a consensus is reached on distribution methods. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov, W. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

STAR seminar on GOES: T. Schmit gave a SaTellite Applications and Research (STAR) seminar in the NOAA Science Center. He also convened a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-type Sounding Product Oversight Panel (SPOP) meeting. The title of the seminar was "GOES: Current (10/12/11/N/O/P) to Future (GOES-R+)". The presentation is available upon request. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Manuscript Review: T. Schmit reviewed a manuscript for publication in the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology (JTECH). (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Proposal Review: J. Key reviewed a proposal on radiation measurements in the Arctic for the National Science Foundation (NSF).  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)
