New SHyMet Distance Learning Course: The first lessons of the newly launched Satellite and
Hydrology Meteorology (SHyMet) Course were conducted during the first week of April 2006. SHyMet is a
collaborative effort between the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), with the initial goal of developing distance learning material for National Weather Service (NWS) interns. (S. Daily IDEA Air Quality Forecasts Resumed: After a winter season hiatus, daily forecast discussions were resumed on April 2, 2006 on the Infusing satellite Data into Environmental Applications (IDEA) web site hosted at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The IDEA team integrates MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aerosol Optical Depth products with satellite detected fire activity, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) surface pollution data, and numerical model wind fields to generate products for air quality assessment and prediction across the U.S. (S. Abstracts submitted to SPIE Remote Sensing & Optics/Photonics in Security and Defense: Two abstracts were submitted for the SPIE Remote Sensing & Optics/Photonics in Security & Defense 2006 conference. The titles are "Lossless Compression of Hyperspectral Imagery via Lookup Tables with Predictor Selection", and "MST-Embedded JPEG-LS: Application to Lossless Compression of Ultraspectral Sounder Data". Manuscript on Hyperspectral Sounder Submitted:  An manuscript entitled "Trade studies of hyperspectral infrared sounder on geostationary satellite" has been submitted to the journal Applied Optics.
