ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JUNE 23, 2006

IN THE PRESS:

Satellite Aviation Weather Project in the Press: An article on the Advanced Satellite Aviation weather Products (ASAP) initiative appears in the current edition of the Earth Observer, which is published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  One of the main goals of the NASA funded ASAP initiative is to introduce new satellite-based products for assessing various aviation hazards.  The article highlights the efforts of several scientists including Wayne Feltz (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Studies, CIMSS), Kris Bedka (CIMSS), Tony Wimmers (CIMSS), and Mike Pavolonis (NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service/Advanced Satellite Products Branch).  The article can be viewed at: http://eospso.gsfc.nasa.gov/eos_observ/pdf/May-Jun06.pdf.  (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Second NPOESS Algorithm Workshop and Quarterly Review:  Scientists from STAR and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)  participated in the second NPOESS algorithm coordination workshop held in Silver Spring,  Maryland, on June 20.   The Integrated Program Office (IPO) has invested resources in hosting and porting the official NPOESS algorithms for the government team.    The goal of the workshop was to promote collaboration and to elicit feedback from the participants on the utility of the IPO algorithm hosting effort.  The ultimate goal is to verify the performance and to gain working knowledge of the NPOESS operational algorithms before launch. On June 21, J. Key participated in the quarterly IPO Internal Government Studies (IGS) review. (Andrew Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov; Jeff Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605; William Straka III, CIMSS, Corey Calvert, CIMSS)

GOES-11 Becomes Operational: On June 21, the GOES-11 replaced Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-10 as the operational Western satellite. As of 16 UTC, a host of realtime products were switched to being processed from GOES-10 to from GOES-11 and displayed on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) realtime web page: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/realtime/. These products from the sounder include clouds, derived product images, and total ozone. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

Eighth Graders Learn About Using Computers to Predict Weather: R. Aune gave a lecture titled "Using Computers to Predict the Weather" to eighth grade students participating in the University of Wisconsin People Program, a summer "university for kids".  The presentation included a brief history of meteorology and forecasting, along with information on the first electronic computers used to solve a set of simplified equations of motion.  The importance of space-based observations to today's computer forecast models was emphasized.  Forecast products from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) were presented to demonstrate how observations from the GOES sounders are used to improve forecast accuracy.  (R.Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, robert.aune@noaa.gov)

Manuscript on GOES Sounder Ozone Submitted:  A manuscript titled "High temporal resolution GOES Sounder single field of view ozone improvements" has been submitted to Geophysical Research Letters. Co-authors are Jinlong Li, Jun Li, Chris Schmidt, Jim Nelson (CIMSS) and Tim Schmit (NESDIS/STAR).  (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755

Cooperative Institute Director's Meeting:  Steve Ackerman (Director, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), Tom Achtor (Executive Director, CIMSS), and Mike Pavolonis (NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS)) attended the NESDIS Cooperative Institute Director's Meeting in Corvallis, OR.  Ackerman gave a review of the research being performed at CIMSS.  (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

Telecons on Patents and GOES-N: T. Schmit participated in a telecon with a Department of  Commerce  lawyer, and R. Heymann, Office of Systems Development (OSD), and the STAR director and deputy director. Several patent items were discussed. Also, T. Schmit gave a presentation to Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Operational Requirements Document Working Group (GORWG) on the relationship between GOES-N class sounders and the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The presentation included ABI simulations from J. Li (CIMSS). (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
