Air Transportation System Satellite Observations Group Meeting:  The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) Satellite Observations sub-group met at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on July 27, 2006.  The meeting was organized by Ralph Petersen and Wayne Feltz of CIMSS.  Several talks were given by members of the NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Branch. T. Schmit spoke on the current state of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R; J. Key (for A. Heidinger) gave a talk on the status of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS), and M. Pavolonis summarized volcanic ash monitoring from satellites. CIMSS Hosts Summer Science Workshop: Held on the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) campus, the 14th CIMSS (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) Workshop on Atmospheric, Earth, and Space Science was attended by 14 high school students July 23-27, 2006. The geographically diverse student body, varying from six students from Wisconsin to seven from states ranging from Colorado to Connecticut and one from Iceland, spent the week with CIMSS and other UW scientists in lectures, hands-on lab exercises, and field trips. Presentations on weather, remote sensing, and climate were interspersed with visits to the geology museum, the community space science center (Space Place), the planetarium, the astronomical observatory, the local National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Sullivan, WI, and Devil’s Lake State Park (for a geological field trip).
