Historical AVHRR Winds Sample for ECMWF: In response to a request by the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a three-month sample of polar winds derived from historical Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data was provided.  ECMWF is hoping to use the historical AVHRR polar wind data set, now more than 20 years in length, in the next version of their reanalysis product.  The three-month sample will be used to test the impact of the winds on the reanalysis.  (R. Dworak, CIMSS, 608-265-8620; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov; D. Santek, CIMSS; C. Velden, CIMSS)

Building Emergency Response Training:  Sessions are being held this week (Septempber 29, 2006), and next, for training on the AOSS (Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences) Building Emergency Response Plan on the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) campus.  Led by T. Demke (SSEC), this safety plan, in conjunction with the UW Police, addresses a variety of situations (fire, weather, injury/death, personal threat, hazardous spill, bomb [threat], and “weapon of mass destruction”[WMD]) and the expected appropriate response by any UW Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) staff members.  The NOAA Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) is located at the SSEC, within the UW AOSS building;  ASPB members are participating in the training.  (T. Telecons on GOES-10: T. Schmit participated in three teleconferes on the move of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-10 this week. The meetings on the September 27 and 28 were with the Office of Systems Operations and International Affairs. The main topics of interest were the planned imager and sounder scan modes and the dates for when routine operations will begin (mid-November). On September 29, the conversation with K. McKenzie (Office of Systems Development) and J. Carr and others was with regard to sample GOES-10 fire data that ASPB/CIMSS provided and the affects of resampling the data to minimize satellite inclination affects. (T.
