Collaborative Radiative Transfer Work with the MetOffice: Paul van Delst, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at NCEP/EMC and the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), visited the UK MetOffice for three weeks in August/September to work on integrating the Radiative Transfer for TOVS (RTTOV) gas absorption algorithm in the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) framework. This was a reciprocal visit from that of Roger Saunders to the JCSDA in April/May. Initial forward model comparisons for NOAA-16 High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) and Aqua Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) are consistent with standalone comparisons. Temperature, water vapour, and ozone Jacobian comparisons were better than expected with good agreement for both strongly and weakly absorbing channels. The visit was funded by the EUMETSAT Numerical Weather Prediction Satellite Application Facility (NWP-SAF). (P. van Delst, CIMSS@NCEP/JCSDA, 301-763-8000)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

Comparison of GOES-12 and GOES-13 Sounder Products: The Cloud Top Pressure (CTP) product based on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-13 Sounder radiance data was compared to the GOES-12 Sounder CTP for October 6, 2006 at 12 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). Preliminary results generated at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) show that the products are comparable. These hourly products, including the Effective Cloud Amount (ECA) are routinely being processed over the CONtinental United States (CONUS).  (T. Schreiner, CIMSS, 608-263-6754; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013)
