IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Three Patent applications Submitted to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF): Bormin Huang sent in the following three patent applications to the University of Wisconsin patent office: (1) Lossless Compression of Hyperspectral Imagery via Lookup Tables with Predictor Selection, (2) MST-Embedded JPEG-LS: Application to Lossless Compression of Ultraspectral Sounder Data, (3) An Optimal Unequal Error Protection Scheme with Turbo Product Codes for Wavelet Compression of Ultraspectral Sounder Data. The first two were recently publicly disclosed in the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) Remote Sensing Europe 11-14 Sept. 2006, while the third one was in the SPIE Annual Meeting 13-17 August 2006.  (B. Huang, CIMSS, 608-265-2231, bormin@ssec.wisc.edu).

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

GOES Infrared Sounder Talk ITSC-15: Jun Li of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) attended the 15th International (A)TOVS Science Conference (ITSC-15) held in Maratea, Italy from 4-10 October 2006, and gave a talk entitled "GOES infrared sounder - current applications and future perspective".  He presented examples of current GOES Sounder applications in severe weather forecast and discussed the future needs on geostationary advanced sounding system. (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608 / 262 - 3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)

New Data Archive of Geostationary Imagery Centered on Hurricanes: Jim Kossin and others at the Cooperative Institute for  Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) are exploring a new data archive created in a collaborative effort between CIMSS and the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, NC. The data archive comprises geostationary imagery that has been renavigated to be centered on hurricanes and spans the period 1983-present. Previous results found that  storm-centered GOES infrared imagery contains information that leads to improvements in hurricane intensity forecasting. CIMSS is extending these  results in two ways: the leading modes of variability of the data are being examined through EOF analyses with the goal of extracting more information than before, and the analysis is being extended back to 1983 (previous data went back to 1995). Initial results show that the new methodology does increase increase skill in the Atlantic, although the increase is modest. With data stratified by intensity, it is expected that the skill level will increase further. (J. Kossin, CIMSS, 608-265-5356)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

G. Wade and T. Schmit will attend the annual National Weather Association (NWA) meeting in Cleveland, OH which is to be held the week of October 16th. The title of G. Wade's presentation is "Improved Resolution and Consistency in the Quest for Better Utilization of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Products", while the title of T. Schmit's presentation is "Operational Applications of GOES-R". Both presentations are available upon request.  (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov)

Third Integrated Global Observing Strategy Cryosphere Workshop: The third Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS) Cryosphere Theme Workshop will be held October 16-18, 2006, in the Netherlands. The workshop will bring together representatives from research institutions and government agencies to work on the identification of the major issues regarding a common and integrated observational strategy for snow and ice cover, permafrost and seasonally frozen land, glaciers, ice sheets, and ice caps, and solid precipitation. It is being hosted by the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) of the European Space Agency (ESA), and sponsored by ESA, the NESDIS International Affairs, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), NASA, and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). J. Key is the lead on the IGOS Cryosphere Theme and organized the workshop. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)
