Operational Use of Polar Winds Data by National Center for Atmospheric Research: The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, began using the the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) direct broadcast polar winds product generated at McMurdo, Antarctica, in their operational Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) model earlier this month (October 2006). Nine other numerical weather prediction centers currently use the MODIS winds in operational forecast systems (though not necessarily the direct broadcast winds): the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), the European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts (ECMWF), the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC), the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), the UK Met Office, Deutscher Wetterdienst (the German weather service), and MeteoFrance. National Snow and Ice Data Center 30th Anniversary: J. Key gave an invited presentation at the National Snow and Ice Data Center’s (NSIDC) 30th Anniversary in Boulder, Colorado. The 30th Anniversary celebration honored Stan Wilson’s (NESDIS) support of NSIDC when he was a NASA program manager many years ago.  Dr. Wilson was in attendance. Christopher Fox, the director of the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), gave a presentation on behalf of G. Withee. Key also participated in a meeting of the Polar DAAC Advisory Group (PoDAG). PoDAG represents the snow and ice science community and provides guidance to NSIDC on issues of data set selection, distribution, and applications.  NSIDC is a NASA Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). (J.
