Papers on Radiative Transfer Published: The current issue of the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology (JAMC) contains two articles on the Successive-Order-of Interaction (SOI) radiative transfer model developed by A. Heidinger, Christoper O'Dell, and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin.  The SOI method is a fast and accurate approach that is well suited for optically thick media with moderate amounts of scattering.  The first paper describes the model and the second paper describes its performance for simulating and assimilating cloudy-sky microwave observations.  The model was developed under a grant from the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) and is slated to be an option in the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, R. Bennartz, UW/AOS, 608-265-2249, T. Greenwald, CIMSS, 608-263-3629)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP

Mixed Terra and Aqua MODIS Polar Winds: Until now, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds were generated separately for the Terra and Aqua satellites, where three consecutive orbits from MODIS on a single satellite were used to estimate wind speed, direction, and height. An experimental product comprised of winds from alternating (usually) Terra and Aqua MODIS orbits is now being produced. Combining data from the two satellites provides better time resolution for wind estimation, and also extends the coverage equatorward by 5 degrees in some cases.  Real-time plots are available at http://stratus.ssec.wisc.edu/products/rtpolarwinds. (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410; S. Wanzong, CIMSS; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov; C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
