ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

White Paper Submitted to NOAA GOES Analaysis of Alternatives Team: A white paper on hyperspectdral sounder ground processing segment considerations was submitted to the NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) Team by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The document provides an assessment of the current status of algorithms and ground processing needed for the utilization of a high capability (hyperspectral) geostationary sounder. The report concludes that high spectral resolution data from geostationary satellites is needed and that the algorithm development and processing of such data is considered relatively low risk and cost. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

COMET Satellite Matrix Workshop:  A workshop was held on February 1, 2007 in Boulder, Colorado, by the Cooperative program for Operational Meteorology, Education, and Training (COMET) to start development on a web-based matrix tool to serve as a primary location where the scientific community could obtain information on environmental satellites.  COMET already developed such a matrix for numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and will extend that concept, rather ambitiously, to meteorological satellites.  Discussion and brainstorming dealt with the struggle to achieve the most efficient balance between breadth and depth to describe the myriad of satellites, instruments, and applications. COMET staff will work to implement an initial matrix for introduction at a May 2007 COMET/IPO(Integrated Program Office) conference in Boulder.  S. Bachmeier and G. S. Wade represented the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Team at the workshop by their remote participation from Madison (via teleconference and GoToMeeting software).  (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov;  A. S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958;  S. Wang, COMET, 303-497-8347)

January 2007 VISIT Activities: During the month of January 2007, the following three Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning sessions were conducted by Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) staff: (1) "TROugh of Warm Air ALoft (TROWAL) Identification", with 4 National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices participating; (2) "CIMSS Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) Forecast Imagery in Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS)", with 5 NWS offices participating; and (3) "MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Products in AWIPS", with 6 NWS forecast offices participating. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS)
