MODIS Polar Winds Now Generated at Finland Direct Broadcast Site: Real-time generation of direct broadcast (DB) Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds began this week at Sodankylä, Finland. Thanks are due to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) for hosting the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) system at their DB site and for providing technical support there. The MODIS winds can be generated faster at DB sites than with our conventional processing system, so that more wind data can be assimilated in early model runs at numerical weather prediction centers. This site provides essentially the same coverage as the Tromsø, Norway, site, and can therefore serve as a backup. Plots of MODIS winds and other products generated at Sodankylä are available at http://stratus.ssec.wisc.edu/db/sodankyla. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; D. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

VISIT Distance Learning Activities: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) staff led two Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning sessions: a "MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Products in Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS)" lesson was given on February 27 (with 1 National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office participating), and a "TROugh of Warm Air aLoft (TROWAL) Indentification" lesson was given on March 1 (with 5 NWS forecast offices participating). (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958; S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)

White Paper written on the Impact of High-temporal and High-spectral Resolution Infrared Observations: At the request of M. Goldberg (STAR), a white paper was written titled "Impact of High-temporal and High-spectral Resolution Infrared Observations". Areas discussed included now-casting applications, hurricane monitoring, Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), other uses such as winds, air quality, SST (Sea Surface Temperature), and clouds. In addtion, a summary of the economic benefits was included. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
