Contribution to NOAA Response to the IPCC: STAR was asked to contribute to the preparation of a NOAA response to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II Report. The response will provide information on NOAA activities related to drought and water resource impacts, coastal and marine ecosystem impacts, arctic impacts, extreme events, ecosystem impacts, and observations that assist society to cope with climate change. NOAA's climate, international affairs, and public relations departments are coordinating the construction of this response. J. Key provided material on Arctic climate change. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

PSDI Proposal Submitted: A proposal was submitted to NOAA/NESDIS/STAR entitled, "CIMSS Research Activities in Support of Geostationary and Polar Orbiting Weather Satellite Science Topics (PSDI)", Steve Ackerman, PI. This project supports research and development activities that have a likelihood to become useful products in the near future. The proposal tasks develop methods, techniques and products that are useful to society, including operational centers charged with informing and warning the public. (T. Achtor, CIMSS, 608-263-4206)

NOAA International Affairs Council Polar Committee Meeting: The Polar Committee of the NOAA International Affairs Council (IAC) met on March 21. Personnel from the U.S. Department of State attended the meeting to gather information on NOAA's activities related to Arctic climate change. J. Key described NESDIS activities relevant to Arctic studies. The committee was established to serve as a policy coordinating forum, to maintain awareness of NOAA’s work in the polar regions and, as appropriate, to address crosscutting program issues including review and oversight for PPBES purposes. Key is the NESDIS representative on the IAC Polar Committee. The NESDIS representative on the IAC is Brent Smith (NESDIS International and Interagency Affairs Office). Eric Madsen participates as a NESDIS International and Interagency Affairs Office liaison to the Polar Committee. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)
